“36. h8 = D…” is a metaphorical piece portraying a pawn - the chess piece - wearing a royal cloak and crown. This painting stems from the idea of pawn promotion. In a chess game, whenever a pawn reaches the other side of the board and cannot move anymore, it is allowed to be promoted to a queen. Whether or not this could mean that hard work will lead to succes is for everyone to decide for themselves. Since the individual pawn can be taken on any square up until the last, I don’t believe hard work is enough to be successful. Even if this pawn doesn’t make any mistakes, it can still fail at any point. The necessary distinction between work and luck has to be made. Success (in carreer) can never be possible without both luck and work.
“36. h8 = D…” is a piece that comments on this issue. Equal chances are only a given if the factor luck can be taken out of the equasion.
